Chapter 1 Record of Forbidden Books Borrowing
Chapter 1 Record of Forbidden Books Borrowing
The cape, like the outstretched claws of a dragon, extends from the land into the sea.
An ancient marble building, weathered by time, humbly hunches over the sea cliff at the end of the headland.
The heavy oak door was rotten and blackened, and the inside was filled with a damp and moldy smell, mixed with a slight stench of ink.
In this old library that is gradually being forgotten, both the decor and the knowledge presented are so outdated and antiquated.
The only one sitting behind the registration counter looked trendy, handsome, and energetic.
Aaron Mosley looked to be in his early twenties. He was wearing a white cotton long-sleeved shirt with a silk black bow tie at the collar, and a black vest with amber corner buckles on top.
He was a time traveler who gained a cheat code upon his arrival: as long as he remained inside this library, his life would not end.
The long years of solitude drove him to despair; if it weren't for the books filling the room, he estimated he would have gone mad long ago.
Aaron spent all his time with books, so he knew very well how dangerous they were.
This is a library of banned books!
The museum's collection includes records of long-lost forbidden witchcraft, ritual magic filled with bloodshed and sacrifice, brutal knightly arts... and countless ancient techniques of destruction, among others.
However, more than a thousand years have passed, and Aaron, despite being well-read, has learned nothing of witchcraft or mystical arts.
The reason is that the forbidden books here have restrictions; only those destined to read them can master the power contained within.
To others, it's nothing more than dry, incomprehensible, and useless text.
Fortunately, Aaron has another advantage that gives him a chance to change this awkward situation.
Within Aaron's consciousness, there exists a book called "The Record of Forbidden Books," which only he can access.
As long as someone borrows a book from him and gains control of its power, Aaron will automatically gain control of that power after the book is returned!
But as time passed in centuries, he never even saw a chosen one.
The records in the "Banned Book Borrowing Record" remain empty to this day.
Waiting numbs people, and now Aaron has long since given up on it.
"Squeak~"
A piercing sound rang out, and the library door was pushed open.
Aaron put down the heavy book he was reading and intended to receive the visitor as usual.
But this time, things have changed.
The words appeared on Aaron's "Borrowing Record of Forbidden Books".
[Borrower, Serial Number I]
Name: Brianna Lorraine
Aaron's eyes widened, his body trembling slightly with excitement.
It's here! It's here! After waiting for over a thousand years, the cheat code has finally been triggered!
However, Aaron quickly calmed down; the years had given him composure.
He should have remained calmer, but his joy was so overwhelming that he could hardly contain himself.
Aaron looked toward the doorway and immediately locked onto his target.
She was a little girl of about twelve or thirteen years old, with thick, long brown hair and a dirty face, but her bright, sparkling eyes were still undeniable.
Although her clothes were somewhat tattered, Aaron could tell at a glance that the dress, from its fabric to its style, was definitely not something an ordinary person would wear.
This girl named Brianna must be a noblewoman.
Brianna entered the library and immediately covered half her face with her sleeve due to the pungent smell that hit her.
After scanning the room, she spotted Aaron and made eye contact with him.
A moment later, Brianna walked over, her eyebrows slightly furrowed: "You're Seventy-Three?"
When Aaron heard "seventy-three," he knew that this was how he addressed himself.
Although the library rarely receives visitors, no fewer than ten people open its doors each year.
If Aaron doesn't keep it a secret, the neighboring towns will definitely discover his secret of immortality.
To avoid this dangerous situation, he would periodically announce that he was the descendant of the former librarian.
Therefore, in the eyes of outsiders, he is now Aaron VIIIII.
However, nobody likes being addressed with cold, hard numbers.
He placed his right hand on his chest and bowed slightly: "Indeed, miss, my name is Aaron Mosley."
"I understand, seventy-three."
Upon hearing this, Aaron thought to himself, "She really is an arrogant young lady."
However, he didn't take it to heart: "Miss, how can I help you?"
"I heard rumors in a nearby town that the books here can give people great power."
Aaron chuckled, "There are such rumors, Miss. Do you desire power?"
"Yes," Brianna nodded firmly, "please pick one out for me."
Hearing this, Aaron was very pleased. He hadn't expected things to go so smoothly; the girl had actually offered to lend him the book!
So Aaron carefully examined the page about Brianna in the "Banned Books Borrowing Guide":
[Borrower, Serial Number I]
Name: Brianna Lorraine
[Suitable for banned books: The Notebooks of Omiros Riddle]
Level of understanding: Not read
[Borrowing Time: Not borrowed]
[Return Date: Not borrowed]
Aaron smiled slightly. "Miss, please wait a moment."
Aaron then left the registration counter and found the book on the second-floor bookshelf in the basement of the library.
"The Notebooks of Omiros Riddle" is a book wrapped in crocodile skin, and the title on the cover and side of the book was added by Aaron himself.
Compared to other books in the library, this notebook is not thick, so Aaron can hold it with one hand.
After Aaron returned to the counter, he pushed the book in front of Brianna.
"I think this one is suitable for you," Aaron said softly.
Brianna hugged the book to her chest, then squatted down and placed the large book on her lap, randomly flipping to a page and beginning to read.
A moment later, Brianna stood up straight, holding the book, tilted her head, and asked:
"Can this book really give me strength?"
Aaron smiled gently and said, "Perhaps, if you believe in legends."
Brianna laid the book flat with her arm and stared at the cover for a few more seconds.
When he raised his head again, his eyes regained their previous firmness:
"How much do you want? I only have five large silver coins left. I can give you four at most."
Aaron shook his head: "It's free. You can borrow the book, but there's one condition."
"What are the conditions?"
"Once you have fully mastered the contents of the book, you must return it to the library."
Brianna nodded in agreement.
Then, Aaron symbolically picked up a pen and wrote down the borrowing record on the counter.
However, the name provided by Brianna was Anne Pierre.
It seems she deliberately concealed her real name, but that didn't matter to Aaron.
After registering, Brianna asked:
"Um... what's the return deadline?"
"Let me think," Aaron frowned, pondering for a few seconds, "Then, before you die."
Brianna looked puzzled: "What if you die first?"
Aaron burst into laughter, which only made Brianna look more confused.
"I think the probability of that happening is low, but... by the way, didn't you call me 'Seventy-Three'? So what comes after that?"
"Seventy-four!" Brianna answered excitedly.
"Correct answer!"
"You have children?"
"I'm single now," Aaron said with a hint of regret.
Brianna finally smiled: "Then I wish you a speedy journey to finding a loving wife, Seventy-three!"
She bowed deeply while holding the book, then pushed open the door and left the library.
The doorway also sang the same song it had sung when she came:
"Squeak~"
