Chapter 587 The Function of the Room of Requirement
Although they knew the Potions exam might be difficult, when they actually received the exam paper in the exam hall, the questions that filled an entire sheet of parchment still caused a series of oppressive gasps throughout the classroom.
In contrast, the practical classes in the afternoon were much better.
Siren thought it was because Snape wasn't there. Without him watching over them and making sarcastic remarks from time to time, many people performed exceptionally well.
Neville sat right next to Siron, who had never seen him so happy while brewing potions. When Professor Marchban announced the end of the exam, Neville also bottled his potion.
Xilun glanced at it. Although it wasn't a standard orange-yellow, at least it didn't have the strange luster and bubbles that usually appeared in potions classes. It should pass without any problem.
At the end of the day, everyone felt exhausted, but the thought that there were still four exams left to go helped them regain their spirits.
Besides Hermione—
Exams are the time when she is most stressed, and her temper is terrifying; she can often fly into a rage over the smallest things.
Fortunately, most of the others were aware of the situation, so when Hermione aggressively said that she would have to take an extra, most difficult math exam, everyone tacitly pretended not to hear anything, and no one was foolish enough to argue with her.
Because there was a conservation of magical creatures exam the next day, everyone only chatted briefly before returning to their dorms. For the first time ever, the Gryffindor common room lights went out before midnight.
Just like yesterday, the morning session was a written exam, and the questions were just as difficult:
Briefly describe the main differences between the eggs of the fire ash snake and the fire crab in terms of appearance, danger, and legal protection level.
Suppose you encounter an aggressive Kaba in the wild, and you only have a magic wand and a pumpkin at your disposal. Please explain your response process and the underlying principles.
Please name a magical animal classified as XXXXX level and describe in detail its characteristics, habits, dangers, and how to deal with it.
Thanks to Haig, for a time he often talked about his three-headed dog, Louie, and even brought it to class as a "teaching assistant."
Cerberus happens to be a level XXXXX magical creature, so as long as you put the things he said on the test paper, you can basically get a good score.
The afternoon practical exam was held on the grassy area near the forbidden forest. It wasn't difficult, but it tested basic skills. First, the students had to identify the hedgehogs hiding among a dozen or so, and then demonstrate how to deal with the hunchbacks.
Next, they need to feed and clean the fire crabs, while also being careful not to get burned, otherwise they will lose a lot of points.
Hermione made a mistake during the final cleaning; perhaps due to nervousness, a small burn was accidentally made on her robe. Although it was only the size of a palm and was quickly extinguished, this error could still cost her many points.
After all, before the exam, the examiner in charge of this subject said that ensuring one's own safety is the most important thing when interacting with magical creatures.
This made Hermione even more upset, so much so that when she went to the library to study that night, neither Siren nor the others dared to approach her and talk to her.
The library was crowded, mostly with fifth and seventh graders. Even though they had just finished dinner and came straight there, they almost couldn't find a seat.
About half an hour later, Siren was the first to leave the library and return to the Gryffindor common room.
There were many people here as well, all nervously reviewing for tomorrow's exams. Almost no one noticed that someone had just come in from outside.
Without bothering anyone, he walked to the corner and found Fred and George waiting for him.
"Are you ready?" Siren asked.
"Of course," Fred said, taking another parchment and a red quill pen from his pocket.
"If you write on it with this pen, the same mark will appear on another piece of parchment," George said.
"When do we take action?"
"Tomorrow morning," Celen said, "it'd be best to wait until everyone is taking their exams and nobody's around."
"I can't wait any longer," Fred said excitedly.
"Behave yourself, at least don't let others notice anything," Siren reminded him. "Otherwise, the Ministry of Magic won't talk to you about evidence."
"Don't worry," Fred nodded. "Nobody cares where Umbridge is, except for a few fools in Slytherin."
The three then returned to the common lounge as if nothing had happened.
Wednesday's exams consist of two parts: astronomy in the morning and evening, and divination in the afternoon.
In the morning, instead of having breakfast in the auditorium with the others, Celen made an excuse to return to the eighth floor after leaving the common room and went to the corridor where the Room of Requirement was located.
"I need a room that leads to the depths of the Forbidden Forest—I need a room that leads to the depths of the Forbidden Forest—"
Xilun went back and forth three times, but there was no change on the wall.
So it really won't work?
Siron was somewhat disappointed, but it was expected. After all, the focus of the Room of Requirement was to create a room that met a need, not a passageway, and besides, the Forbidden Forest wasn't even inside the castle.
Xilun turned around again and walked to the other side of the corridor, silently repeating to himself.
"I need a maze big enough—I need one—"
Suddenly, a door appeared out of nowhere on the wall.
But Xilun stopped and couldn't help but frown.
Because this was the second time he had passed by here, normally there should be one more time before the House of Requirement appears.
So this room—
Xilen grasped the doorknob and opened the door.
A cold, decaying smell wafted over, a smell that Bill would recognize if he were here. It was pretty much the same smell inside the pyramids that were first discovered.
Siren instinctively waved his wand and cast a bubbling spell on himself, which made him feel much better.
He peered into the room, which was completely dark.
With the light streaming in from the corridor, it was barely possible to tell that this was a classroom that had been abandoned for many years. The desks and chairs were old and completely covered in dust and cobwebs.
Xilun didn't know where he was, but judging from the dim lighting, he was probably in an underground classroom.
At first, Xiren didn't understand why the House of Requirement would conjure up such a room for him, until he saw a storage cabinet by the wall.
As Xilun looked over, a mysterious force moved the lockers aside, revealing a dark, deep passage behind them.
