Chapter 66 Old Tang's Adventure
Chapter 66 Old Tang's Adventure
At Kassel College, fifty meters underground, Old Tang was still struggling to trek; one might say he was preparing to start swimming.
He was exhausted and soaked from walking; if it weren't for the generous reward, he would have almost given up.
The passageway sloped downwards, and the humidity increased as he went deeper. Condensed water droplets dripped down with a pattering sound, making it feel like he was walking in a downpour. The shallow puddles beneath his feet grew to knee-deep, making each step a struggle.
"I have a bad feeling. I had the same feeling during the last mission at the hospital," Old Tang muttered to himself. "I really hope we don't run into those blue-eyed monsters again."
Ahead, a red light was flashing at a fixed frequency, and Old Tang guessed that he was nearing the end.
His feet slipped, he lost his footing, and his body floated completely in the water. The water was cold and salty, and smelled just like seawater, but thankfully it was clean and transparent.
Old Tang, confident in his swimming prowess, dove in. He immediately regretted it; the shotgun ammunition was unusable now that it was wet, and worse still, there was the cell phone.
He quickly surfaced and shook the water off his phone, then frantically pressed the power button. However, the salty, cold water had clearly soaked the battery, and no matter how he pressed it, there was no response whatsoever.
The phone was mailed to him by his employer before the mission started; it wasn't worth much, but who knows what new instructions he might receive next time.
Old Tang instinctively shuddered. Many screams came from the team channel in his headset, shouting "Devil!" "Evil!" "Help!" and then the team members fell silent.
What exactly is this academy hiding? Even those well-trained hunters have suffered because of it. Old Tang couldn't help but tremble.
He splashed water on his face to clear his head.
The team members have probably failed; they'll have to face the rest of the journey on their own.
For that $500 million!
Helpless, he threw his phone into the water, then dove in again, slowly swimming towards the flashing red light.
The phone slowly sank into the water and got stuck in a crack.
It's getting closer and closer; the bright red light underwater belongs to an extremely old gate system.
At the end of the passage was a heavily rusted gate, made of brass, with the date and the name of the factory that originally cast it marked on the corners. It looked like a German factory, and the year was 1912, almost a century ago.
At that time, Germany had the most advanced casting technology in the world, so this thing must have been very expensive when it was shipped across the ocean to the United States.
1912, a very, very long time ago.
Old Tang successfully found the manual opening handle and pulled it open with a jolt.
"Ah!" he screamed.
The moment the sluice gate opened, he lost his balance and plummeted down with tens or hundreds of tons of salty, cold water.
Old Tang felt as if he were riding a small kayak out of Niagara Falls. There was nothing he could do but close his eyes tightly and fall with the cascading water... until he was surrounded by bubbles, and with a "plop," he fell into the deep water.
Old Tang slowly opened his eyes, then his eyes widened. "Dude, does your luck have to be this bad?"
He saw something completely unexpected: a pair of eyes the size of billiard balls staring curiously at him a few meters in front of him... It was a very real great white shark.
Perhaps to prove to Old Tang that it was a young shark with the ability to chew, the great white shark opened its mouth wide, revealing a dense array of thorny teeth.
Old Tang glanced at his hand in despair. This was the unluckiest day of his life. His hand had been scraped and cut by the gate when he fell, and a faint red stain was oozing out.
Anyone who has watched the Discovery Channel knows that sharks are bloodthirsty creatures. Even if you're a blockhead, as long as you smell blood, they'll pounce and bite you. And Old Tang really is a good meal.
"Brother..." A faint boy's voice echoed in the air.
"Please, are you calling me?" At the end of his life, Old Tang actually felt that the world was really funny, why would a shark open its mouth and talk?
Suddenly, an unusual expression appeared in the shark's bloodshot eyes. This was the first time Old Tang felt that he could actually see the expression in a fish's eyes.
The shark slowly closed its mouth, swaying its fins and tail, but it wasn't moving forward; instead, it was silently retreating. The distance between it and Old Tang gradually increased, like a vicious wolf making a planned retreat when facing a wild boar.
When the distance had increased to about 10 meters, the great white shark suddenly turned around, dived underwater at high speed, and plunged headfirst into the artificial rock cave.
Almost instantly, a red mist of blood surged and rose from the rocky cave, followed by the throwing out of a large, dead fish.
Old Tang didn't understand what was going on. He only saw a pair of shark eyes, which seemed to reveal expressions, flash in the reef cave. The shark looked at him with extreme fear before slowly disappearing.
He didn't quite understand what was going on. The shark seemed to be terrified of him and had taken over the big fish's nest to hide itself.
But what is there to be afraid of?
Old Tang patted himself down and found that he didn't even have a usable weapon left.
At that moment, he felt something in his pants pocket: a tin bottle, its surface grayish, covered with patterns of lions and trees, looking like something from the past. The stopper was sealed with a piece of molten gray tin, and shaking it made a sloshing sound; it seemed to contain about half a bottle of liquid.
Old Tang had no idea what this thing was for. His employer had sent it to him along with his phone before the mission started, only saying to keep it with him and to follow the operating procedures in critical situations. However, no operating procedures were ever sent, and Old Tang had almost forgotten about it.
"Whatever." Old Tang thought for a moment, stuffed the gray tin bottle back into his pants pocket, climbed up the artificial granite cliff, and flipped over the glass wall next to it.
"Kassel College, Aquatic Ecosystem Pond No. 7, Inhabited by: Pliosauroidea." That's what the sign next to it says.
Since Old Tang had no idea what the Greek word "Pliosauroidea" meant, he readily assumed it was the biological classification of a great white shark, thus mistaking predator for predator in the huge pool beside him. The true owner of the pool was not among them at the time.
Old Tang carefully moved forward along the glass wall. All around were huge glass pools, which were interconnected. In other words, the entire "Shicodi" was a pool, except that glass partitions separated the pools to create pathways for people to pass through.
He didn't know how long he had walked, but finally at the end of the underwater tunnel he saw a sign that read "Ice Cellar".
