Chapter 11 Am I an Undercover Agent?
Chapter 11 Am I an Undercover Agent?
A tingling sensation ran through the back of my head.
A memory hidden deep within the original owner's soul fragments suddenly awakens.
In the summer of 1993, the original owner failed the joint entrance exam and was idle.
Until one day, the exact date is now unclear, but he remembers it was a rainy night when he was lying at home watching TV when there was a sudden knock on the door.
The door opened, and there stood James Huang.
He led the original owner to a cemetery under the cover of night.
Cypress Hills Cemetery.
Located in Glendale, Queens, New York, it was built in 1848 and straddles the border between Brooklyn and Queens.
This place is famous for being the final resting place for many New York Police Department officers who died in the line of duty. Although it is an open cemetery, it is actually the NYPD's private cemetery. At least three hundred NYPD officers are buried here.
James Huang led him to a tombstone.
Johnson J. Hsu.
This is the name of the person whose tombstone is on it.
Jason J. Xu, that's what he means.
Hsu is the spelling of the surname Xu used by older immigrants and Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong Island and Southeast Asia, while newer immigrants mostly use the spelling Xu.
"This is your father's grave!"
"Huh?" The original owner was stunned.
"My father is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, not here."
"That was a cenotaph. I had it secretly switched during the burial. He was actually moved here on the day of his burial."
Do you know why?
The original owner had an impulsive personality, but was not stupid.
"Is my dad a traitor?"
"You can't say that about your father. Jia Dong is a policeman, an undercover cop in the 5th Precinct of New York."
James Huang recounted that he and the original owner's father graduated from the same police academy class, but shortly after graduation, Xu Jiadong was sent to Chinatown to infiltrate. The reason was simple: he was born in Chinatown and was a native of Chinatown.
James Huang, on the other hand, comes from a wealthy family and lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
After graduation, James Wong stayed at the New York Police Department headquarters and was later assigned to the 75th Precinct, Cypress Hill, the area along 75th Street, one of the bloodiest and most chaotic areas in New York City. He served in the 75th Precinct for six years, achieving outstanding results, and was promoted to Sergeant of the 5th Precinct.
That's when he learned that Xu Jiadong had become an undercover agent.
The two had been classmates at the police academy for half a year and were both of Chinese descent, so they worked together very well.
In 84, Mr. Yin was arrested, and Xu Jiadong played a part in it. However, Chinatown was in such a chaotic state at the time that the old black police chief wanted to destroy the Chinatown gangs in one fell swoop and refused to let Xu Jiadong return.
That's normal, they're Chinese, they're easy to manipulate!
As a result, Xu Jiadong died in a conflict between the Ghost Shadow Gang and BTK Vietnamese Monkeys before he could extricate himself...
New York gangs are not like Hong Kong gangs, who fight with machetes.
They use guns here!
Xu Jiadong was a mid-to-high-ranking member of the Ghost Shadow Gang. After Mr. Yin was arrested, many high-ranking members fled New York, leaving only Kenny, Jimmy, and a few others struggling to keep things afloat. Xu Jiadong, however, used his connections with James Huang to join forces and suppress BTK, maintaining the situation. But because of this, he became a favorite of the Ghost Shadow Gang, and someone BTK considered doomed.
Later, James Wong was promoted to the head of the Fifth Precinct.
The original black man was arrested for embezzlement and sent to Auburn Jail in New York.
Prior to this, he had not contacted the original owner, also out of concern that Xu Jiadong's identity would be exposed and the Ghost Shadow Gang would take their anger out on the original owner.
Now, he has taken down BTK and become the boss of the Fifth Precinct, believing he has the ability to protect the original owner.
That's why I came to your door secretly!
That's roughly the situation.
James meant that he hoped the original owner could continue his studies, and he would also sponsor the original owner and send him to complete his university studies.
This is no small matter!
Even at a regular university, tuition can be as high as $30,000 a year.
Ivy League schools and private colleges (LACs) are even more expensive, mostly ranging from $50,000 to $80,000.
Therefore, every American college student leaves with a heavy debt burden... This is no joke.
James's willingness to cover tuition fees means that the original owner can enter society without any debt.
This is something that most young Americans dream of.
But the original owner refused!
After Xu Jiadong's death, he grew up with the help and care of Kenny and others.
Kenny helped Xu Jiadong pay the inheritance tax on his house back then, and he couldn't possibly let that favor go to waste...
At the same time, he harbored deep resentment towards the New York police.
If it weren't for that damned black guy, his father wouldn't have died at the hands of the Vietnamese monkeys.
Of course, the original owner also knew that it had nothing to do with James.
In the past, he had been involved in fights and brawls in Chinatown, and sometimes he would do other illegal and disorderly things.
But his file was spotless, with no record of even injuring anyone. And all of this was done quietly by James.
He was in agony, torn between Kenny and his family who had raised him and his father, who turned out to be a traitor he despised.
James hopes he will go to college and leave Chinatown.
Many Chinese, especially older immigrants, never leave Chinatown in their entire lives, let alone speak English, spending their lives speaking only Hokkien or Cantonese. But this is not the outcome James hoped for. He wanted the original owner to go out, integrate into this society, achieve something, get married, have children, and preferably marry a wealthy Western woman.
This was also Xu Jiadong's wish before his death.
The original owner rejected James's offer, but at the same time felt a strong sense of guilt, believing that his father had harmed Mr. Yin.
It was after that that he became increasingly ruthless, earning him the nickname "Bone Crusher."
Even the task of dealing with "Li the Cripple" was requested by the original owner.
Kenny initially refused, but eventually couldn't resist the original owner's request and agreed to let him carry out the mission.
Is it a state of self-abandonment?
I guess so!
In the original owner's heart, he was born and raised here, he was a part of Chinatown, and he didn't want to be a traitor...
"I know!"
Xu Shengjie said softly, "However, Mr. Yin has already ordered me to leave the Ghost Shadow Gang."
"You know nothing!"
James launched into a tirade of profanities.
After he finished cursing, he suddenly stopped talking, turned to look at Xu Shengjie, and asked, "You just said that Dennis made you leave the Ghost Shadow Gang?"
"Yes!"
"When did this happen?"
"The day Li the Cripple died..."
"Oh, that was the day he came back."
James Huang hesitated for a moment, then said, "No conditions?"
"Yes, my uncle wants me to pay $50,000 to leave the gang within a month, as a lesson for me."
"That bastard, how old are you? Where did you get fifty thousand dollars?"
"He has to give his brothers in the gang an explanation."
James's face twitched.
He knew it was a matter of face.
Moreover, Mr. Yin may not actually make Xu Shengjie come up with the $50,000; he will most likely pay for it himself.
He's an old-fashioned man who believes in following the rules.
Despite spending ten years in prison, Mr. Yin is not short of money.
Back then, the Ghost Shadows gang dominated Chinatown, making a killing.
Why is the government suddenly targeting the Ghost Shadow Gang?
Chinatown is too fat!
It is extremely difficult for gangs from other regions to enter.
Even the five major families tried to take action, but ultimately they did not gain any advantage.
In New York's Chinatown in the 1970s and 80s, those old-timers were truly ruthless... Mr. Yin also had great charisma; he had men, guns, and money at his disposal. The Gopher Gang, such a fierce gang, was utterly defeated by the Ghost Gang, suffering heavy losses and never daring to covet the profits in Chinatown again.
Mr. Yin was imprisoned on Rikers Island, New York's largest and most violent prison.
But he was still able to thrive on Rikers Island, thanks in no small part to the power of money.
"So what are your plans for the future?"
Jeffrey, my advice from last year still holds true. I can send you to Dwight School or Dalton School, away from Chinatown… The environment there is excellent, and the schools have sufficient teaching staff. Dwight School is my alma mater and has a close partnership with Yale University. You can study hard, get into university, and achieve great things.
Stop focusing on Chinatown.
Chinatown is slowly opening up, and as you kids grow up, you'll eventually have to integrate into this city and this country.
"I'm planning to write a book!"
"what?"
Xu Shengjie's answer was somewhat unexpected by James Huang.
He slammed on the brakes, and the impala's tires screeched against the ground.
Fortunately, it was nighttime, and there weren't many vehicles on the road.
Even so, several cars honked their horns as they drove past the impala, their windows rolled down, and the drivers hurled insults at James Huang.
James Huang realized what had happened, turned on his hazard lights, apologized, and then restarted the car.
"You just said you're going to write a book?"
